For our first class we were given the challenge of making several drawings both with our eyes closed and open. We were given a concept to work from and we could come up with whatever we related to that term. The terms were light/dark, movement/stasis (both done with eyes closed) and opening/closing, horizontal/vertical (both with eyes open).
I was nervous to begin this exercise and at first it was difficult to sit in a room of strangers with eyes closed and to draw. However once I started I found that it was much easier with eyes closed than open. I think this is because there isn’t any expectations when they’re closed. It doesn’t have to look good, but it is an honest and raw representation of how you think, feel and imagine things. Drawing with my eyes closed gave me a sense of freedom to not worry about how my image was turning out.
Although none of the images I created in this first session are anything amazing I think it was a good gateway into the week to come. It gave me a pathway to begin to develop a concept for my A2 drawing.
