Part of exploring sleep and wake is trying to decipher a specific threshold moment – if there is one. With this design project, we were looking to create a new threshold moment in a pre-existing building. I wanted to focus on movement and materials and the feelings they can both provoke. I found the main street facing window mesmerising and knew I wanted to have this as the focus of my design. Throughout the day the sun and surrounding buildings cast varying shadows and light throughout the space through this window. This really creates a range of atmospheres constantly transforming the room. From the street you can only see upwards of this window due to the slope so I also wanted to utilise the upper space of the room. I’ve used tactile materials to encourage people to touch, a way to fully experience the space. The movement from the street, up the steps through the “window” and then up along a raised ramp creates an event out of entering the building rather than simply walking through a door.
