Project 2: Potential Materials

Creating my model I used a variety of Materials. Cardboard, paper, perspex, fake grass, wood veneer sheets and foam board. But in reality these would need to be made out of something much more substantial…

I wanted to create a connection between my model and the original site map of Albert Park through the use of materials. Compared to the tough exterior of the building I wanted the interior to be soft and have a natural feel to it. This provided me a great opportunity to link the two and potentially use some materials you would find in the park inside the space.

Firstly I wanted to do a light coloured wooden floor. This gives a classy and tidy look whilst also softening and brightening the space. There are many options available and it is easily sourced. It is also easy to work with making it an ideal material for many spaces.

I was undecided as to what I wanted my ramp to be made out of. originally I was thinking glass, I wanted it to look as if people were floating. However I looked at using a form of fake grass to link the exterior to the interior as I have seen examples online of it being done in more and more interior spaces such as offices and home. This is sometimes in the form of areas of flooring or as a “living” or “green” wall. The fake grass is a fun more vibrant option and helps bring in a natural element. It is available in different thicknesses and colours so can be used in a variety of ways. The fake grass is a great way to link the park to the gallery but also bring a sense of nature into the city environment.

Glass balustrades are increasingly popular as they offer a safe boundary whilst also being attractive and not hindering views. The framing of the interventions could all be easily done with timber.
