Project 2: Site Visit (Part 2)

We visited the gallery site again this time taking measurements and more detailed sketches. We were told to really think about the threshold moments as we moved in and around the space.

Being both interior and exterior we measured around the building and viewed it from the outside as well as in. The exterior and interior had very different feelings to them. The exterior was noisy and busy as it is in a public space right next to the road. The building exterior is also quite strong and almost harsh looking being a tall stone structure. Everything is very lineal and designed in a very “European” way. The interior is in comparison very quiet and subdued. Towards to back of the space there is minimal light and I found this to be a very relaxing space to be in. Towards the front, near the street facing window the room is filled with a soft light that filters naturally through the space.

Throughout the week we were able to visit the gallery as much as we wanted and I took this opportunity to visit at different times of the day. This was interesting as I was able to see how the light affects the mood of space during the day and also notice details of the room I had missed on my initial visit.

Front of building (evening)
Back hallway with light filtering in from rooms (morning)
View of gallery from street looking in (afternoon)
Exterior beams of gallery, symmetrical around the building. Give a Colonial style (early afternoon)
Street view looking across the road from gallery (View you would see from inside building) (early afternoon)
Interior view of north facing window
Back wall (from outside) – These are the two windows I opened up (evening)
