Te Aranga Principles

In class we looked into the Te Aranga principles and how we can incorporate these into our design. The Te Aranga principles are a set of Maori values that needs to be considered in regards to Maori and their land when designing in the public space. They help us to better understand/approach cultural issues appropriately and to avoid issues like cultural appropriation.They cover environmental, social, economic and spatial development changes in New Zealand.

Kaitiakitanga
Manage and conserve environment
– enhancing the biodiversity of the space
– introduce native plants that attract certain species of birds/insect/animals)

Manaakitanga
Obligation to be a good host
– create a space that is welcoming to all
– hospitality

Wairuatanga
Connection between people and their environment
– connection between the bath house and pocket forest
– connection between guests and the way they use the space (touch, sounds, visually)

Kotahitanga
Unity, cohesion and collaboration
– community bath house (work to the benefit of the public)
– sustainability (materials)
– reducing waste and dealing with it responsibly and sustainably
