Week 4 – Artist Model, Liz West

For my artist model I choose British born artist Liz West. A graduate from Glasgow School of Art, she covers a broad body of work comprised of site specific installations, sculpture and wall based artwork.
Liz West creates vivid environments that mix luminous colour and light. Through this she aims to provoke a heightened sensory awareness and explores how sensory phenomena can invoke psychological and physical responses. Her work has been commissioned and exhibited internationally by places such as the Natural History Museum, National Trust, National Science and Media Museum, Dubai Design Week and Bristol Biennial.

Our Colour Reflection is an installation displayed in a handful of locations created using mirror and acrylic tubing. 15 different coloured mirrored acrylic circles are set at varying heights and reflect their colour into the surroundings whilst also reflecting the surrounding architecture. The colours used are in relation to the stained glass that is present at the sites and the installation considers the importance of light within the sites also.

Chamber Series is an installation made from wood, mirror, acrylic, paint, LED lights/T5 bulbs and objects. This series aims to explore the physicality and illusions of spaces through the use of mirror and light creating the sense of endless space and reflection of the objects within each coloured space.

Difference is Important is constructed using paint, coloured bulbs, acrylic, mirror and objects. The harsh and intense colour is used to stimulate the senses and make us question the often irregular nature of a gallery space and how we interpret the space.

Through No.3 is an installation made from steel, polycarbonate and optically clear vinyl. This piece uses Wests primary materials of colour and light and the nature of the walk-through design is quite literally for visitors to view things in a different light.

An Additive Mix is an installation made using T8 fluorescent bulbs, cellulose gels, polycarbonate sleeves, mirror, wood and metal frames. Exhibited at “Light Fantastic” at the National Media Museum celebrating UNESCO International Year of Light. The title of the piece is taken from the principle that white light is composed of different colours of the spectrum (additive colours). This piece takes the viewer and places them in the individual hues that combine to create and white glow in a space made to seem endless due to the mirrored walls.
