Tutorial Exercise: Week 9

Exercise: Using the keywords I selected for the focus of my annotations I began to see a trend in what I was questioning and looking at in the readings. From this I was able to make a connection to my studio practice and create a critical question and statement that helps me to explore this idea further.

Critical Question/Statement: Throughout the semester I have been looking at the relationship between a range of spaces and how people interact with them. Focusing on the way we move through spaces and how objects within can alter how or why we move the way we do.

Why This: I became interested in this idea after seeing a video “Dancing to Art” on the Tate Modern website (https://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-britain/dancing-art). The dancers first analyse and interpret their chosen artwork, then portray that through dance and movement.

I’m interested at looking further into:
– Why we move the way we do through spaces
– How space can manipulate us and our movement
– How objects within a space can influence us
– Relationship between those creating the spaces and those using them
– Empathy and how designing empathically can influence a certain emotional response
– How certain emotional responses trigger certain movements
– Push and pull, the connection of how things work around each other.

Moving on from this I am going to look into suggestions from my lecturer such as: Impacts and affect, emotions and space (look into Spaciousness and Crowding, Yi-fu Tuan), any cultural aspects, mauri – life force or feelings of a place, intangibles and the relationship between the intangible and the material world.
