After finishing part one we were introduced to part two:Intervening/Interfering. For this part we were to develop 5 proposals for an intervention into our chosen social space from part one. Once we had 5 proposals developed we chose one to enact over the mid semester break which would then produce an artefact and supporting documentation.
I began by changing my social space as the area I had chosen for part one, a cafe, was not going to be suitable for me to intervene into. As we went back into lockdown I also wanted to choose a space that I could work with no matter what level restrictions we were in. Because of this I decided to use the apartment that I live in with my partner and our flatmate. After deciding on using my apartment I then had to do some analysis similar to that of part one so that I could better understand the space I would be working in. It was easy enough to do as I know the space well after living here for a year and a half but I began to think about the space more in depth and to start looking into the emotional connection we have with the space.
Initially I struggled to generate any ideas for an intervention and the ones I was able to come up with weren’t very strong. I was focusing more on creating some sort of object that could be placed within the space instead of using the space to help generate an action or outcome. Once I began thinking of actions occurring within the space I was able to come up with some ideas to work with further into my proposals.
It was also slightly difficult as I didn’t know if I would actually be enacting my chosen proposal or if it would just be on paper. The unknown elements made working towards something final a little bit harder to figure out but I think in the end I was able to put forward some proposals that would be effective either way and that I could work to improve even more.
My proposals outline my reasons for choosing the apartment, the current climate of the apartment and what I am aiming to achieve or implement into the apartment. Each proposal looks at a general theme of disrupting what is a comfortable space, which I thought would be interesting as this is something unusual that you wouldn’t often find in a home.
I am currently unsure if the proposals would have the desired outcome or work as intended but I have thought them through and considered the possibilities for each. At the end of the day, if they don’t go to plan something great could come out of that too, or I learn a new lesson from it. Either way I am gaining the chance to learn and develop a new way of thinking and implementing my design into a space which I’m excited about.
