Week 3 – Conceptual Terms, Temporal Vocab, Script

Conceptual Terms:
Reflection: I mostly consider reflection in terms of self reflection or looking back on things. Mirror reflection comes to mind also and the idea of seeing something clearly. Reflective surfaces are another way I consider the term. The way they bounce light back. There is an element of protection to reflective surfaces… by reflecting back the image or light it is in a way stopping itself from being passed through, like a shield.

Reminisce: I love to reminisce, to think back fondly on different events and places, to remember the emotional climate I felt from them. There are many sites around that world that I can look back on and have those memories and I think the ability to reminisce about those spaces solidifies a special place for them with me. In terms of the site, due to its age and history in Auckland I’m sure that Fort Lane is a space that many can reminisce about and have their own fond memories of.

Sensorial:  Senses are important in how we interpret space and as designers we can put emphasis on certain sense to enhance the work or highlight certain aspects. Personally I find it stressful and overwhelming having all my senses “activated” at once but other people might like a lot going on. Sensory designs are great for getting the mind working and often have a nostalgic connotation especially things with sound and smell. In this way they help the viewer form a connection with the work. Fort lane is a busy site with a lot of noise, smells and visual elements. Depending on when you visit it can be quite a different place with a lot happening or rather peaceful.

Emotion: I’m an emotional person and I search out things that allow me to feel.  This can be anything such as movies or tv shows, conversations, books, designs and exhibitions. If I can be emotionally invested in something I find my memories of that (whatever it is) are much better and I feel much more positively towards it. In terms of design, emotion comes through the thought and story behind what it is and I try to work in this way. To create something meaningful and with purpose rather than because I think it just looks cool.

History: I’ve always been drawn to older things and I love to know the back story to said things. Architecture, clothing, ways of living, institutions. I love to learn about where the world and everything in it has come from and how it has developed through time. History is a huge draw for me in architecture with a love of Renaissance, Baroque, Neo Gothic and Art Deco styles. Not only the buildings themselves but the people who inhabited them and the ways ion which they lived. Fort Lane has a history of its own which I find is what usually draws me to a space and helps me connect with it.

Temporal Words:
The Beginning

The Middle

The End

I wanted to use words that related to time and space. As I am looking at the idea of parallel worlds (intersections/co-existing) and cycles I wanted words that could explain a lifecycle but also the concept that we can’t define these. Inspired from the TV show Dark which posters say “Everything is connected,” “The end is the beginning” and “The question is not where but when.” I chose to use the German words as the inspiration was from a German show and having lived in Germany I also have a connection to the language.

Script:
A space to wander through, no destination in mind. Don’t worry, keep going and keep your eyes roving, searching, observing, probing. What do you see and what do you not? What was there before you, 60 minutes, 60 hours, 60 months, 60 years? What will be there after? Think of what could exist parallel to you, in the gaps between buildings and the air surrounding. Is it possible there is more? More we can’t see, something we sense, feel, believe? Allow yourself to feel, to be and to think, cast you mind wide in every direction, even those you cannot name and remember to blink. Those dark spaces of blinks, what could be there, what do you see and is it something you fear? Reminisce, reflect and think of the cycles those with a beginning, a middle, an end and those that are indescribable.
