Personal Bathroom

With the intention of design a public bath house I thought it was important to think about how I myself bath and what are some aspects that maybe are similar to bathing in a public setting.

I’ll start by describing my bathroom. It’s a bright space, the walls are a textured white tile and the amenities are all white too. The floor is tiled in a dark grey tone and the draws are a deep brown wood. Being in the middle of the apartment there isn’t any windows but there is a large skylight on the ceiling. There are no tall buildings or trees around that block the sun so the bathroom stays bright pretty much all day (weather dependant of course).

My bathroom also doubles as the laundry. As you walk in immediately to the right is the washing machine and dryer which can make the room both noisy and very warm if the dryer is on. As there are no windows in the bathroom we have a fan to help with circulation this adds a lot of noise when turned on but is necessary to use. The surfaces in the space are usually a bit cold but not necessarily uncomfortable. There is a heated towel rail and the water heats up very quickly (big plus!). When the fan and dryer are off I would consider it to be quite a tranquil space as it’s very quiet apart from the running water. There is only one entrance to the room, through the door, which has a lock making it feel very secure.

I share the bathroom with my partner as our flatmate has his own bathroom. The two bathrooms are beside each other and there is a small square where the fan is at the top of the wall as his bathroom uses the same extraction fan as ours. This can make the space a bit awkward at times as sound carries through easily and makes the space feel less private. Because it is just me and my partner using the bathroom we’re able to keep the things we use out around the space making it easier when we need them. Previously we lived in a flat with a shared bathroom where we had to store things away so it’s a nice change. Cleaning the bathroom is super easy as it’s an uncluttered and newly renovated space. We keep it clean as we use it so it is never a big drama and nothing has the chance to get dirty/messy.
